There are different stories associated with the festival of Navratri but all of these stories give a common message that is ‘victory of Good over bad’ There are two popular folklores which briefly narrate the story of Navratri.

In the Northern and Western parts of India, the victory of Lord Rama over the demon King Ravana is celebrated as Navratri. As per this story Ravana, the demon King kidnapped Sita Mata, consort of Lord Rama. The Lord killed the demon after a hard battle for nine days and on the tenth day Rama killed Ravana by shooting a bolt in his navel.

In the Eastern and Northeastern parts of India, Navratri is observed to celebrate the victory of goddess Durga over Mahishasura. According to this story, there was once a bison demon named Mahishasura who had gained a boon from Brahma that no man would be able to kill him. Mahishasura was filled with pride and set out destroying everything in order to rule the world. Lord Indra went to seek help of the Trinity as the demon had defeated Lord Indra too. Learning about the destruction the demon had caused. Lord Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva decided to combine their power in order to create a Supreme power that would kill the demon. After they combined their powers Goddess Durga appeared. She fought the bison evil Mahishasura for nine days and finally on the tenth day She succeeded in killing the demon to reestablish harmony and Dharma. The tenth day is celebrated as ‘Vijayadashmi’. She was effective and her prosperity is remembered each year through the Durga Pooja. The story is written in the epic ‘Devi Mahatmya’.

Maa Chandraghanta – मां चंद्रघंटा

The name of third Shakti is Chandraghanta. There is a half-circular moon in her forehead. She is charmful and bright. She is Golden color. She has three eyes and ten hands holding with ten types of swords – etc. weapons and arrows etc. She is seated on Lion and ready for going in war to fight. She is unprecedented image of bravery. The frightful sound of her bell terrifies all the villains, demons and danavas.

In Durga Pooja the third day of Navratri is very important in Navaratri. This day the mind of the sadhak enters Manipura Cakra. At this stage by the grace of Maa Chandraghanta he becomes capable of seeing unearthly and divine things. He smells the divine fragrance and many types of divine sound become audible to him. On this day and in this stage of discipline the sadhak is required to be most careful.

By the grace of Mother Chandraghanta all sins of the sadhak (striver) are burnt up and obstacles removed. Her worship is instantly fruitful. She is always in a gesture as if ready to proceed for the battlefield and thus she removes the difficulties of devotees very promptly. Her vehicle is lion and so her worshiper becomes valorous and fearless like a lion. The sound of her bell always protects her devotees from evil spirits. As soon as the sadhak invokes her, her bell immediately becomes active and starts ringing to protect the devotee under her shelter.

मां चंद्रघंटा – Chandraghanta
माँ दुर्गाजी की तीसरी शक्ति का नाम चंद्रघंटा है। नवरात्रि उपासना में तीसरे दिन की पूजा का अत्यधिक महत्व है और इस दिन इन्हीं के विग्रह का पूजन-आराधन किया जाता है। इस दिन …साधक का मन ‘मणिपूर’ चक्र में प्रविष्ट होता है।

माँ चंद्रघंटा की कृपा से अलौकिक वस्तुओं के दर्शन होते हैं, दिव्य सुगंधियों का अनुभव होता है तथा विविध प्रकार की दिव्य ध्वनियाँ सुनाई देती हैं। ये क्षण साधक के लिए अत्यंत सावधान रहने के होते हैं।
माँ का यह स्वरूप परम शांतिदायक और कल्याणकारी है। इनके मस्तक में घंटे का आकार का अर्धचंद्र है, इसी कारण से इन्हें चंद्रघंटा देवी कहा जाता है। इनके शरीर का रंग स्वर्ण के समान चमकीला है। इनके दस हाथ हैं। इनके दसों हाथों में खड्ग आदि शस्त्र तथा बाण आदि अस्त्र विभूषित हैं। इनका वाहन सिंह है। इनकी मुद्रा युद्ध के लिए उद्यत रहने की होती है। मां चंद्रघंटा की कृपा से साधक के समस्त पाप और बाधाएँ विनष्ट हो जाती हैं। इनकी आराधना सद्यः फलदायी है। माँ भक्तों के कष्ट का निवारण शीघ्र ही कर देती हैं। इनका उपासक सिंह की तरह पराक्रमी और निर्भय हो जाता है। इनके घंटे की ध्वनि सदा अपने भक्तों को प्रेतबाधा से रक्षा करती है। इनका ध्यान करते ही शरणागत की रक्षा के लिए इस घंटे की ध्वनि निनादित हो उठती है।

या देवी सर्वभू‍तेषु माँ चंद्रघंटा रूपेण संस्थिता।
नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमो नम:।।

अर्थ : हे माँ! सर्वत्र विराजमान और चंद्रघंटा के रूप में प्रसिद्ध अम्बे, आपको मेरा बार-बार प्रणाम है। या मैं आपको बारंबार प्रणाम करता हूँ। हे माँ, मुझे सब पापों से मुक्ति प्रदान करें।

इस दिन सांवली रंग की ऐसी विवाहित महिला जिसके चेहरे पर तेज हो, को बुलाकर उनका पूजन करना चाहिए। भोजन में दही और हलवा खिलाएँ। भेंट में कलश और मंदिर की घंटी भेंट करना चाहिए।

प्रसादं तनुते मह्यं चन्द्रघण्टेति विश्रुता

*Dashami (vijayadashami)* – There is abundance in the universe for all and I will always tap the same and create what I want through unconditional love, Sadhana, nishkama seva and faith.
